Words and their social Definitions

Content: is what you are sharing with your following or friends. It consists of posts, memes, videos, blog posts, pictures, or anything that can be shared in some form.

Memes: are pictures with funny or inspirational quotes over them. If that doesn't makes sense google it.

Google it: is another way of saying search online.

Posts: is what you do when you upload content to a social site.

Blog: is a free website platform to write articles and other content to be shared with a few people or to the world.

Following: are the number of people that have requested updates from you in some form. Social sites will also use words: likes, friends, and fans to describe this same concept.

Like or Pinit buttons: are ways people express how they like something. The likes are one of the major keys to social media and how you become well known. As you share content people will like it and it is then shared to their friends and their friend's friends. Before you know it you have a viral piece of content on your hands.

Viral: is a piece of content that has been share so many times that a huge number of people in the world have seen it. That number varies according to the type of content. The bar for something to be viral rises every year. Only a few years ago viral was 100,000 people seeing a piece of content. Today it is somewhere in the millions.

The Core of Social

Weather you are reading this for personal reasons or as a business all of these principles will be applicable in both cases. Being online or in person you are always doing some form of social marketing. Social is interacting with others to share thoughts, ideas, interests, and passions. Marketing is the process of making people know you exist. My friend Spencer Tagger, a social marketing pro, always says "Social Marketing is 5% marketing and 95% social".

All communication you do should fall into two categories, helpful or funny. People will not care to listen or be around you if you can not provide entertainment or something that improves their life in some way. People care more about what they have in common with you, friends, goals, and aspirations. They care less about promotions or what you had for breakfast. I'm not saying don't post content that promotes a product or when you plan to eat dinner but what I am saying is understand your audience and know what they would like to see or hear. Don't expect anyone to like and share anything that doesn't resonate with them.

Advertising on Facebook

Facebook has made it really easy to advertise however if you don't know what you are doing you could spend a lot of money and get nothing out of it. Here are 3 tips to advertise on Facebook.

  1.  Decide what you want your audience to do. What is your goal in starting a marketing campaign? Do you want them to click to your site, like your page, download a product or share your content? For example I will be setting up an ad soon to encourage people to like my page and share their longboarding photos with me for the chance to win a green set of longboard wheels. (if you are giving out prizes make sure they are relevant to your company so you don't get useless likes to your page, see this Blog Post for more details on this)
  2. Be really specific when setting up your market to advertise to. When you are setting an ad
campaign Facebook gives you the option to pick who you want to see your ad. You could say anything from "people who like ice-cream" to "friends of Elton John who like golfing and live in California". If you have a small budget you want the audience to be no bigger than 20,000 people. You want your audience to be the most ideal costumer you want to see walk through your door. If you have a list of emails you can even ad those to the list and if there is a Facebook account attached to the emails they will be advertised directly to. This is where you make or brake your budget. When you get more pacific the better your chances that the person who click on your ad will convert and become a fan or buy something.
  3. Have good photos or videos for your ad. People only click things that appeal to them in some way.
Have many photos and a video or two for one campaign. You will have a better chance of connecting with deferent people for deferent photos.
